High House Farm Brewery is located in a converted former grain store on the 200 acre Urwin family farm near Matfen in Northumberland.
The Urwin family have been farming in this area since 1891 and Steven, founder of High House Farm Brewery, is a fourth generation farmer. The farm is a mix of livestock (beef cattle and sheep) and arable (wheat & barley) crops.
High House Farm is managed in a traditional non-intensive manner, in a way that reflects the family's commitment to the livestock and the wonderful environment in which they work.
This time-honoured philosophy to the farm is carried through directly to the running of the brewery. To para-phrase on old farming saying:
The farm is situated just half a mile from Hadrian’s Wall and 25 minutes from Newcastle.
Steven and his wife Sally will also be setting up a brewery visitor centre with a bar, café, shop and a function room. The Visitor Centre is open until mid August.
Steven carries out brewery tours for small and large groups. These involve a short talk on the history of the brewery and an explanation of the brewery process with a tour around the brewery, and a tasting session of all three beers. A buffet lunch or evening meal can also be arranged.
